515 Aluminum Oxide is a hard, crushed anti-slip additive for acrylic sealers and resinous coatings. Mixed into the coating, it leaves a textured surface that grips when wet, which matters on exterior concrete that gets rain, sprinklers, and morning dew. It’s available in 3 lb, 10 lb, and 50 lb quantities and in several grits, so the texture can be matched to the traffic the surface will see and how it will be cleaned.

Start with 60 grit for residential exteriors

For a patio, walkway, steps, or porch sealed with an acrylic sealer, 60 grit is the recommended starting point. The texture is moderate, enough for traction on a wet surface without a heavy, coarse feel.

Choose the Aluminum Oxide grit for the texture

Grit controls how the surface feels and how it cleans. Lower numbers are coarser.

  • 14 and 30: the coarsest grits. They give the most traction and the most visible texture, and they’re harder to mop and scrub. They suit wet, greasy, or heavy-traffic areas where grip matters more than easy cleaning.
  • 46 and 60: a moderate texture. 46 gives a little more traction than 60.
  • 80 and 100: a lighter, smoother texture that’s easier to clean and changes the look of the surface less.
  • 240: very fine, the smoothest texture in the range.

Good to know

  • Aluminum oxide lowers the sheen of a coating, and the effect is more visible the more you use.
  • It settles, so stir the coating regularly while you apply.
  • Coarser grits are heavy and settle fast, so they’re usually broadcast into a wet coat rather than mixed into a thin sealer.
  • Test a small area first to confirm the texture and cleanability before doing the full surface.
